Saritha Musuku

Saritha Musuku is a highly successful, free-spirited deaf model, actress and social influencer with a huge fan following. She has won innumerable modelling hunts, awards, beauty pageants competing with hearing models and has done work for various brands, music videos, movies and TV shows, and has a web-series underway. Saritha is a pathbreaker as there aren't many deaf models and actors in India. Though her journey has not been easy, her vibrant optimism is devoid of any bitterness.

She was born in Warangal, Telengana on 13th August, 1991 to hearing parents. Her parents are from farming background, her father recently passed away. They are three brothers (two of them are deaf) & three sisters (two including her are deaf ). Her family is a bit conservative, and has not been completely supportive of her work. She has been independently managing her expenses for many years now.

Saritha studied in a deaf school till Class X, but later changed to mainstream school, while also trying for modelling competitions and assignments since 2009. She faced several challenges in these 12 years, primarily because her communication needs were not respected or fully understood. There has been very little awareness related to importance of accessibility and sign language interpreters in her line of work. There have been many times, when she was asked to speak or use a cochler implant, but she has always asserted her preference to use sign language, as that is her identity and culture.

She also felt discriminated at times, with other hearing models with same amount of experience or skills, being preferred just because of their hearing privilege. There have been many instances when her skills were doubted, at times she was not given clear instructions or even the make up before the shoot, but as soon as she was on stage her brilliant work stunned the skeptics and they had to acknowledge her confidence and talent.

She adds :  "I wish there were more deaf people involved in the modelling and entertainment sector, and there was better access involved. There's so much we can learn from each other - hearing and deaf community. Things are slow because of COVID19 pandemic and many projects have been put on hold, but I hope that we will overcome."

Sh. Sibaji Panda

Sh. Sibaji Panda was born in Odisha, India on 17 May 1974. He became deaf at the age of 10, but he found sign language support at home, since his elder brother was also deaf. He was an active but average student in a mainstream school, but he had what all other students didn't have in those years - the fearless confidence to speak up for what's right. Inspired by the stories of Mahatma Gandhi, he once challenged all his teachers, even his Principal about the low quality education system and rampant cheating.  He managed to just pass his Class 10th and 12th exams with a low percentage, because he didn't cheat.  He started working with Delhi Foundation for Deaf Women as a computer trainer. It was there that he was spotted by Ulrike Zeeshan, a German professor who was researching about Indian Sign Language. Both of them collaborated to create the first formal one year ISL training course - Level A, B and C used by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and Ali Yavar Jung Nat
